A newly published article in Frontiers in Microbiology compared the traditional Kaufman-White serotyping to the Check & Trace Salmonella (CTS) Assay and an in silico platform using whole-genome sequencing data for predicting serotypes (SeqSero).
Scientists from Nestlé Research Center, University of Georgia and Check-Points worked together to compare effective and reliable methods of salmonella serotyping .
According to the article; “Our study indicates that the CTS assay is a good alternative for routine laboratories as it is an easy to use method with a short turn-around-time.” And goes on to state: “Because of its robustness and straightforward utilization, the CTS assay can be easily implemented.”
Serotyping is an important tool for source tracking and outbreak investigation. However, the traditional method needs more than 150 sera, takes extensive training and can take several days. In comparison, the Whole Genome Sequence based in silico platform takes up-to two weeks and the CTS assay only takes eight hours.
